South Coast Singing Circles are for the slightly older child and those who are children at heart! Two Singing Circle classes will be offered this fall:
Children's Singing Circle and Women's Singing Circle.
Children's Singing Circle was developed to fill the gap for children who were a bit too young for formal music classes, and a bit too old to continue taking South Coast Music Together classes. In a Children's Singing Circle class we will play at music making, but stretch our musical muscles at the same time. We will learn about breath awareness, beat recognition, division of beat recognition,
identifying meters, and rhythm patterns; all done through play with a focus on
imagination. We will be exploring
singing voice, parts singing, different tonalities and tonal patterns; all done
through play with a focus on listening. There
is so much, much more to explore than the concepts listed above, and the lead
of the child will always be followed. If
a child has a question regarding music that is beyond the scope of the above we
will certainly pursue the answer. Children this age still benefit greatly from caregiver modeling, so caregivers join us for the first ten minutes and the last ten minutes of our hour long class. Younger siblings are welcome to attend during the times when the caregiver joins us in class. Caregivers are asked to volunteer to be an on site chaperone one week out of the eight weeks, academic year session, or the eight week summer session.
Women's Singing Circle is a place where women join together in spirit and song and become invigorated by the community aspect of music making. It is a time for nurturing the musician within, even if that musician has been dormant or hiding for many years! All songs are learned by ear, so no prior music "lessons" are required. In addition to the blending of our voices we will explore vocal health, breathing techniques and ways in which music and the community of women in our lives enhances our lives.
